Transforming Global Glaucoma Care
What began as a vision to improve how visual field loss is detected has now grown into a platform that’s being used globally to help prevent avoidable blindness in the places that need it most.
Ophthalmologist, clinician-scientist, and innovator A/Prof George Kong always believed that technology should work for patients – not the other way round. This belief inspired him to develop Melbourne Rapid Fields (MRF), an AI-powered online perimetry software designed to make advanced glaucoma and vision testing more accessible, portable, and user-friendly.
From Melbourne to the World
Developed in collaboration with The University of Melbourne and The Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital, MRF has been clinically validated in 17 internationally peer-reviewed studies, demonstrating strong concordance with gold-standard tools like the Humphrey Field Analyzer.
Today, MRF is used in over 250 clinics globally, including:
- 216 centres across Australia and New Zealand
- 150+ centres in India
- Multiple sites across China, the UK, and the USA
The software supports standard visual field protocols (24-2, 10-2, Esterman equivalent), AI-assisted gaze monitoring, and even visual acuity assessments – all delivered via standard laptops or tablets, in clinic or at home.
Breaking Barriers in India and China
In India, MRF partnered with leading clinicians like Dr. Shibal Bhartiya at Marengo Asia Hospitals and community educators at Vision Unlimited in Gurgaon. Together, using our Hindi-language MRF interface, we’ve screened over 350 high-risk patients for glaucoma in just two months – proof that localised technology can truly empower grassroots eye care.
In China, the renowned Wenzhou Ophthalmic Centre recently used MRF to test 300 patients in a month. The software’s rapid testing process and diagnostic accuracy have been praised for helping reach underserved populations who traditionally lack access to standard perimetry equipment.
Built for Accessibility and Global Use
One of MRF’s most powerful features is its multilingual voice guidance, currently available in 15 languages, making it highly adaptable to diverse populations. Its regulatory approvals include CE Mark (EU), UKCA (UK), TGA (Australia), MedSafe (NZ), and CDSCO (India).
Because MRF is browser-based and AI-enabled, it can be deployed remotely, in telehealth settings, or within clinics with limited resources – with no need for expensive hardware or complex installations.
Looking Ahead
GLANCE Optical founded by A/Prof George Kong to commercialise MRF is driven by a clear mission: to make advanced vision testing accessible to everyone, everywhere. Whether it’s a child in a rural village or a glaucoma patient unable to attend clinic, MRF brings high-quality perimetry directly to them.
Seeing the impact of MRF around the world – from cutting-edge hospitals to outreach programs in remote communities – reminds George why he built it in the first place.
