Sometimes a prompt can make a life-changing difference

Lung cancer remains one of Australia’s biggest cancer challenges with 9,000 people expected to die from it each year — and finding it earlier can make a real difference to patient outcomes.

That’s why we launched our lung cancer screening initiative with BetterConsult.

By identifying patients presenting to their GP with symptoms and risk factors associated with lung cancer, BetterConsult can prompt the GP to consider the next appropriate step — whether that’s further investigation, a chest CT or referral to a specialist.

And the early results are incredibly encouraging:

• 30,000 prompts delivered to GPs
• 89% increase in chest CT scan referrals
• 482 additional referrals compared with the control group
• 19 active lung cancer diagnoses identified to date

Behind every number is a patient who may now have an earlier diagnosis and a clearer path to treatment.

For us, this is the real promise of digital health: using data and intelligent technology to support clinicians at the point of care — without adding unnecessary complexity to their workflow.
